Welcome to the 534 new readers of The Basketball Academy.

This is the day you become a better player or coach.

Today’s Basketball Academy takes 3 minutes and 30 seconds to read.

Here’s what we’re serving up:

🏀 #1 - Favorite thing we watched 🎥

🏀 #2 - Favorite thing we listened to 🎧

🏀 #3 - Favorite thing we read 📚

#1 Breakdown 🎥

MUST ADD ACTION

“Horns Spain Stampede”

This is one of our favorite actions we saw.

It’s a great way to put pressure on the rim efficiently.

Notice how the false action shifts the D to allow Ja a straight line w/ no help.

Offense is the application of skill in space, and coaching is placing the right players in the right spots to put pressure on the rim. Coach Jenkins here has placed his best “Driver” in an area on the floor where he likes to attack the rim. Simply put great offense.

#2 The Basketball Podcast 🎧

Chris Oliver’s Basketball Podcast is a MUST listen & follow.

His latest episode is with Doug Lemov, an innovator for coaches and players. He’s written some fantastic books to help better the sports world.

Quotes from the episode:

“Players remember what they think about. If I want them to remember things during games, I should tie those things to language cues. Come up with three or four phrases in practice that you will say in games EX: ‘High hands!’ ‘Transition quickly!’ ‘Peek at the rim!’ Now pregame talk reminds athletes of those phrases as they will be said during the game.”
As coaches "If we have our players chase five rabbits, they end up catching none of them. Don’t overload.”

The best coaches are disciplined with their language.

This episode discusses game coaching and using video as a learning tool.

#3 LEADERSHIP 📚

“Heavy is the head that wears the crown.” - King Henry IV

  • Ask your teammates - “How can I be a better leader?”

  • Show your teammates - “How can they help you become a better leader?”

  • The litmus test of a good leader: When you ask how someone’s day is going, you genuinely care about the response.

Leadership Nuggets:

Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win."

Leadership is the tremendous responsibility of seeing those around us rise.

It’s not about being “in charge.” It’s about taking care of those in our charge.

You better have someone who is dying to follow you. Make them feel you’ll do anything for them.

“Impressing people is utterly different from being truly impressive.” Ryan Holliday, Ego is the Enemy.
