Shokunin: Immerse Yourself in Your Craft π§±Β
Finding Mastery in your Craft
(itβs a way of life)
The Shokunin spirit is defined as an artisan who masters their profession. In Japan, great pride is taken in even the most menial of tasks in any profession. It is one thing to read about it, but another to witness an entire country operate with such dedication to their work, no matter what it is.
Shokunin is a Japanese word that means "artisan" or "craftsman". It's defined by colloquial Japanese and signifies someone who has reached a high level of accomplishment and is committed to carrying on the legacy of a traditional craft.
Shokunin also implies an attitude and social consciousness, and the shokunin has a social obligation to work for the general welfare of the people.
Once you decide your occupation. Immerse yourself in your craft. Not for yourself, but to pass on your mastery & wisdom to future generations.
Shokunin in coaching- Reading books, learning new Actions, watching film, connecting with like minded coaches.

Mistake Response π£οΈ
Mistakes are going to happen.
Here are three ways to recover from your mistakesπ
1. Immediate Refocus with a Reset Routine
Having a reset routine helps people quickly move past mistakes and regain focus. This routine can be simple and personalized, involving physical and mental steps to clear the mind and reset attention.
Components of a Reset Routine:
Deep Breathing: Taking a few deep breaths helps calm the nervous system and reduce immediate stress.
Physical Cue: A physical action, such as adjusting equipment, wiping sweat, or tapping a specific part of the body, can signal the brain to reset.
Mental Cue: A positive affirmation or a keyword like βreset,β βnext,β or βfocusβ helps redirect the mind to the present moment.
2. Learn and Let Go
Turning mistakes into learning opportunities allows people to grow and improve without being bogged down by negative emotions. This approach involves a quick analysis followed by letting go of the mistake.
Steps to Learn and Let Go:
Brief Analysis: Quickly assess what went wrong and why.
Takeaway: Identify one key takeaway or lesson from the mistake. For instance, if a mistake was due to a technical error, the takeaway might be to adjust the technique slightly.
Release the Mistake: Mentally let go of the error by visualizing it being put in a βmental trash binβ or imagining it floating away.
3. Positive Self-Talk and Reframing
Positive self-talk and cognitive reframing help shift the personβs mindset from negativity and self-criticism to positivity and growth. This technique boosts confidence and resilience.
Techniques for Positive Self-Talk and Reframing:
Acknowledge the Mistake: Accept that mistakes are a natural part of sports.
Positive Affirmations: Use positive affirmations to counteract negative thoughts. Phrases like βIβve trained for this,β βIβm capable and strong,β or βMistakes are part of learningβ reinforce a positive outlook.
Reframe the Situation: Shift the perspective from seeing the mistake as a failure to viewing it as an opportunity for improvement. For example, instead of thinking βI failed,β reframe it as βThis is a chance to learn and get better.β
Takeaways
Implementing these strategies can help people quickly recover from mistakes, maintain their focus, and continue performing at their best. Developing a reset routine, learning from mistakes, and using positive self-talk and reframing are powerful tools for enhancing resilience and mental toughness in sports.
