In 1968 Bill Walsh became the Offensive Coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Bengals were an expansion team and had a roster of "misfit toys" the rest of the league didn't want.
Their QB Virgil Carter was known for having a "terrible arm" to the point where Virgil Carter was told "if you want to throw the ball more than 20 yds, you better fill it with helium."
Embracing Virgil's anatomical weaknesses, Walsh developed what is now known as the infamous "West Coast Offense." Passes thrown to receivers who run short precise routes within 12 yards of the line of scrimmage.
In 1970 Bengals won the AFC Central Division. After continual success, Walsh became the Niners Head Coach in 1979 creating a dynasty with an undersized Joe Montana. Teams began taking Walsh's assistants and majority of teams were running Walsh's offense by the mid 2000's.
