π Wanting: The Power of Mimetic Desire in Everyday Life π
This reminds us of the book Wanting
Jimmy Carrβs speech and Wanting by Luke Burgis are similar in that they both explore how our desires are shaped by others, not from within.
In Wanting, Burgis unpacks RenΓ© Girardβs theory of mimetic desireβthe idea that we imitate the desires of people we admire, envy, or compete with. We donβt simply want things; we want what others want, often unconsciously. This leads to cycles of rivalry, comparison, and unfulfillment.
Jimmy Carr expresses the same concept in a more concise and humorous way, noting that our wants often arenβt realβthey're just reflections of someone elseβs.
Both point to this truth:
We think weβre making independent choices, but much of what we pursueβstatus, success, lifestyleβis borrowed from others. The difference is in delivery: Wanting offers the full framework; Carr delivers the punchline.
In short, Carr gives you the insight. Wanting gives you the playbook.

"I love being able to play this game for a living. It's one of the greatest joys of my life, but does it fill the deepest wants and desires of my heart? Absolutely not."
